Sebbie: Mom you clean so much you’re reading a book about cleaning!

This is true. I did the other book but didn’t quite get past the part where I needed to buy new hangers for my closet and rehanging my clothes.

This book is about LEARNING  to tidy up. It’s the premise that because we aren’t taught to tidy, we don’t actually know how to do it. She refutes all of the well known clutter-isms… “If you haven’t worn it in a year, toss it” or “Put it in a box for 6 months and see if you really need it”. Instead she has you ask one simple question: “Does it spark joy?”

It isn’t as straightforward as other self-help books. As I was reading the first few chapters I couldn’t help but wonder if this was a biography of her life and it would end with, “if you want help, hire me here”.

But it eventually started giving instruction, in a round about way. I’m finding myself rereading and rereading (especially if I’m trying to chase my toddler around at the same time). I can’t just skim through this book, finding the tasks requires me to focus on the words.  I’m also having to reference Instagram (#tidyingup #konmarimethod) because she doesn’t have pictures.

But I am enjoying reading her anecdotes and she inspired me to tackle the first part – clothes. I didn’t get a before pic, but here’s an after of my drawer:

And, because cleaning my own wasn’t enough, I felt compelled to do my husband’s side of the closet.

Just in case you're wondering, this is what I'm doing on my year off...
